Creepy CGI Critters

Sun Oct 8, 2006, 10:05 AM
Speaking of animated films (and we weren't) -- what is it with the seemingly endless parade of cruddy CGI funny-animal feature flicks? It's like all the movie studios were required by law to produce and release CGI-critter movies that are (1) obnoxious, (2) loud, and (3) replete with fart and crap gags. (Before this, of course, such films were allowed to be 2-D, i.e. "Home on the Range.")

...according to the reviews I've read, the recent CGI film "Open Season" is one long crapfest. Think I'll stay home instead.

Yeh, and the reviews lovingly describe how one of the characters takes a dump right on screen. That's entertainment!

EVERYONE is normal... until you get to know them.
:iconjhwood9:
...my wife and I rarely go to movies these days, because it seems that the producers are trying their best to include the grossest, nastiest, most repulsive activities in their films. I know most people regard this fad as merely childish, but frankly I am insulted... I've seen interviews with these Hollywood types and all of them have nothing but contempt for us "suckers" in their audience. They're giving us the finger in their movies... "this stuff is sewage, and you paid for it...! The joke is on you!"
:finger:

...so, whenever we want to watch a movie now, my wife and I buy one of the classics on DVD. It's cheaper and easier than going to the theater anyway.

BTW I should mention that I found a wonderful little CG animated film featuring cute little fluffy animals. I purchased "Over the Hedge" on impulse, and I found it a very pleasing, entertaining movie. I've shown it to a number of visiting relatives, and they all plan to buy a copy too.

I plan to post a more detailed review and recommendation in my own snowbuni.com forum.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by "Over the Hedge" (though I still loathe Michael Fry). We just saw "Flushed Away" last night and I heartily recommend it. Made by Dreamworks and Aardman Animation, it has the distinctive look of previous Aardman efforts (Chicken Run and Wallace and Grommit) in spite of the fact that Nick Park does not seem to be involved in this production.

BTW, JP, where are you? Is everything okay?

Agree with you about "Flushed Away," a very entertaining film, and not scatological at all (as the title might indicate). I accidentally bought the "full screen" edition on DVD, so I need to find a widescreen copy to replace it.
=)

Last week my wife and I watched "Zathura," which just became an instant favorite for its treatment of retro-50's robots and spaceships. Not a perfect film, but very entertaining. Not animated, either, but produced the old-fashioned way, with lots of miniatures, stage effects, puppets, full-body costumes, and other props; using CG to improve the detail but not replace the classic effects. Great stuff, recommended, two thumbs and two big toes up.

Oh, yeah, I should ask, JP, where are you?

When I started work on the Zathura video game, I wanted to make a virtual version of the game itself. Seemed like a natural to me. But the publisher wanted to make it into a platformer. Gosh, how original.

Those bastards...! Um, what is a platformer?

Where the player spends a lot of time jumping from platform to platform, like Mario or Spyro the Dragon. It's fairly common (IMO) for video game publishers to take a licensed product and make it a simple, "move through the world, collect this, kill that" sort of game.

JP, if you're out there, there's a very real chance that we may keep doing this until you show up and beat some sense into us.
